Review: Shoo, Jimmy Choo!

Catey Hill kindly sent me a copy of her book Shoo, Jimmy Choo!: The Modern Girl's Guide to Spending Less and Saving More a very long time ago, and here is a very, very late review.

This is a very accessible and relatable personal finance guide for 20- and 30- something women . Catey's tone is that of a good friend - though one who is not afraid to smack some sense into you if you complain that you are broke and crying into your four dollar daily latte.

I have several friends who could greatly benefit from this book, as well as Catey's helpful website that features plenty of tools to help get your finances on track.

This is a very good introduction to personal finance, and it covers all of the bases. Keep in mind it is written for a very specific audience. Though much of the information would be helpful to anybody, it is really aimed towards 20- and 30- something women who have a love of fashion and style, and might currently be living outside their means.

Finally Some Good News...

I finally have some good news on the financial front: that impending layoff that I wrote about a while ago has been called off. For now. My husband got a call today that he will at least be safe now until the end of the year, and then they will have to see what the budget is like at that point.

I am happy, but on the other hand, this constant back and forth is getting really old and stressful. It's hard to plan for the future when neither of us really feel confident in our jobs. But for now, we have to just be thankful that we both will still be working.

I want to become more accountable with my spending, since that was the point of this blog with I created it. But honestly, it is a bit embarrassing. Though the money usually goes in all the places that it is supposed to go, I am nowhere near as meticulous as other PF bloggers and I know that I could and should be doing better.

I shop. A lot. Particularly when I am stressed. And lay-offs make me stressed. Counter-intuitive I know, but hey, I am being honest here. When I first found out he was being laid off I spend a lot on all the luxury items that I knew I wouldn't be able to afford when the lay off actually happened. It only made sense to stockpile my expensive makeup, right?

So anyway, enough of that. It just adds to more stress and clutter that I don't need.

Saving Money on a Vacation

My husband and I are planning to take our first real vacation in five years, and I am very excited! We will be heading to San Francisco and Napa. It is going to be pricey, but we have the money saved and I am taking little steps to save some money here and there. First, we booked the flight and hotel through Orbitz via Ebates. We will be getting back around $45 because of that. This is on top of coupons that we used that saved some money as well. I've also been watching Groupon in San Francisco, and snagged a deal that will save on a nice dinner during our trip.

Yummy Earth Organic Lollipops

Right now you can get a 150-Count Container for $8.91 if you subscribe and save (you can cancel after they are shipped) and that comes with free shipping. YUM!

Two Year Blogoversary!

I just realized that this blog turned two a few days ago! So much has changed with us in the past two years. When I started Saving Cents in the City, we were about to buy a co-op apartment. Needless to say, I am really happy that we decided against that. As is we are antsy and want to leave the area, plus we are facing a potential job loss, which would have made being stuck with such a major financial commitment truly disastrous!

Back in the early days of this blog, I was primarily focused on paying off my car loan, which was a huge burden on us. We paid that off last year, and I think without a specific goal in mind we have been floundering a bit. I haven't been paying as much attention to this blog or to other PF blogs as I had in the past. We were still saving, but it was with no real purpose.

Now we are in an interesting place. Like I mentioned, there is a very potential layoff in the near future. We are prepared financially: our emergency fund is fully funded. But I don't think I am prepared yet emotionally for the change. I am feeling angry about all the frivolous things that I have purchased, wishing that I had not succumbed to my whims so often. But in the long run, I know we are okay.

(2) John Frieda Root Awakening - $10
(1) Pepto - $4.99
(1) Paper Mate 10ct. - $.99
(1) Caliber Scissors - $.99

Coupons Used:
(2) $2.50 off John Frieda

Total OOP: $2.39 ($.91 in tax)

Earned: 1, 5, .99, and .99 in ECBs

As I was paying I asked the cashier what the total was before tax, so I could make sure that I used as many ECBs to pay as possible. When we left my husband informed me that he wants to die every time he hears me say those words, and how he saw me eyeing the other ECBs in my wallet. Sorry husband, but almost free stuff is fun. ;)

Swagbucks Trusted Surveys

So I know that I am a little bit behind in mentioning this, but Swagbucks now has a survey page, which can help you to earn major SBs! I really appreciate that they also list the odds that I will be able to complete the survey, because it helps me to make a better use of my time. Since they have added the surveys I have gotten back to earning $25 in Amazon gift cards a month. Plus, in other geeky and exciting news, they have also added a ledger so that I can see my lifetime totals, plus how much I have earned from referrals, Swagcodes, and searches. Since I have joined Swagbucks, I have made well over $400 in Amazon gift cards!
